How to practise alphabetical order

Alphabetical order means arranging words by the letters they begin with. In Year 1, start by comparing the first letter, then look at the next letter when two words begin the same way.

A simple strategy

  1. Say each word clearly.
  2. Compare the first letters and find which comes first in the alphabet.
  3. If two words start with the same letter, compare their next letters.
  4. Read the finished list from top to bottom to check the order.

Self-check: Ask your child to explain why one word comes before another rather than only giving the answer.
