Hearing Digraphs in Words

A digraph is a pair of letters that work together to represent one sound. Children can practise by listening for the target sound before looking closely at the letters.

Phonics Routine

  1. Say the word slowly.
  2. Listen for the target sound.
  3. Find the letters representing that sound.
  4. Blend the sounds and read the whole word.

After reading a word, say it again and identify the digraph. This connects sound, spelling and meaning.
