Using the ai and ay Spelling Patterns

The vowel team ai commonly appears in the middle of words, as in rain and paint. The pattern ay commonly appears at the end of words, as in play and day. These are useful patterns to notice when reading and spelling.

Try This Strategy

  1. Say the word slowly.
  2. Listen for the long /ā/ sound.
  3. Look at where the sound occurs in the word.
  4. Choose ai or ay, then read the word again.
