Learning Intention

Students will calculate and compare the area and perimeter of rectangles.

Australian Curriculum

AC9M4M01

Estimate and measure length, area and perimeter using metric units.

Teacher Notes

Use grid paper and real classroom objects. Emphasise the difference between area (inside) and perimeter (around).

Skills Practised

  • Calculating area
  • Calculating perimeter
  • Comparing shapes
  • Practical measurement

Area and Perimeter: Keep Them Separate

Perimeter measures the distance around a shape. Area measures the amount of surface inside it. Drawing a quick labelled rectangle can help you decide which measurement a problem needs.

Before You Calculate

  1. Read the question and identify whether it asks for area or perimeter.
  2. Write the known side lengths and units.
  3. Choose the matching strategy.
  4. Check that the final unit makes sense.

For a rectangle, perimeter is found by adding all four side lengths. Area is found by multiplying length by width. A useful estimate can help you spot an unreasonable answer.

Explain Your Thinking

When solving a word problem, include the calculation and a short sentence explaining what the answer represents.
