About This Worksheet
Predicting and connecting are useful early reading behaviours. Children use clues from a picture, title or short text to make a sensible prediction, then connect the text with something they already know or have experienced.
I Can Checklist
- I can make a prediction before or during reading.
- I can explain what helped me make my prediction.
- I can connect a text with something I know.
How to Use It
Look at the title or illustration first and ask, “What do you think this might be about?” Read the text aloud if needed. Pause to discuss whether the prediction was supported by the text. There is no need for every prediction to be correct; the goal is to explain the thinking behind it.
Parent Tip
When reading a picture book together, pause before turning the page and ask what might happen next. After reading, ask “Did your prediction happen?” and “What in the story helped you think that?”
