Students will identify, spell, and use words featuring short a and short i vowels, and apply a strategy for remembering tricky spellings.

Teacher Notes

Blend each sound left to right. Short a says /a/ as in cat. Short i says /i/ as in sit. Praise correct letter formation as much as correct spelling.

Reading and Spelling Short a and i CVC Words

CVC words contain a consonant, vowel and consonant, such as cat or sit. Say each sound clearly and blend the sounds together to read the whole word.

Try This Strategy

  1. Point to each letter.
  2. Say the sound for each letter.
  3. Blend the sounds from left to right.
  4. Write the word and check the middle vowel.
