Blend each sound left to right. Short o says /o/ as in dog. Short u says /u/ as in sun. Praise correct letter formation as much as correct spelling.

Reading and Spelling Short o and u CVC Words

CVC words with short o or short u can look similar, so listening to the middle sound is important. Compare words carefully rather than guessing from the first letter.

Try This Strategy

  1. Say each sound in order.
  2. Listen closely to the middle vowel.
  3. Blend the sounds into the whole word.
  4. Write the word and check the vowel.
